Every fragrance site has opinions. What separates Scent Situations is how we arrive at ours — and how transparent we are about the distinction between what we’ve tested ourselves and what the community reports.
Two Types of Scores — And Why It Matters
We never mix personal experience with community research. Every fragrance on this site carries one of two labels:
🧪 SS Tested Score
The fragrance was personally worn and evaluated by the Scent Situations team. Scores are based on real skin tests — applied, timed and documented. When you see this label, the numbers come from our experience, not the internet’s.
📊 Community Score
The fragrance was evaluated through systematic community research. We cross-reference Fragrantica’s performance voting data, Reddit discussions (primarily r/fragrance), YouTube reviewer consensus, and individual user comments across fragrance forums. Scores are derived from aggregated user sentiment and reported performance data — not from a single source or a single reviewer’s nose.
Both are valid. Neither pretends to be the other. Every article and review on this site clearly states which methodology was used. As we personally test more fragrances, Community Scores get upgraded to SS Tested Scores — and we note the change.
The Scoring Criteria
Whether SS Tested or Community-derived, every fragrance is evaluated on the same seven criteria with fixed weights. The final Scent Situations Score is always out of 10.
| Criterion | Weight | What It Measures |
|---|---|---|
| Scent Quality | 25% | How well-constructed, balanced and pleasant the fragrance smells — from opening through dry-down. Does it evolve or stay flat? Does it smell refined or synthetic? |
| Situation Fit | 20% | How well the fragrance matches its intended context (office, date, gym, outdoors). A 10/10 date cologne that’s terrible at the office still gets a high Situation Fit — in the date article. Context is everything. |
| Longevity | 15% | How long the fragrance remains detectable on skin. For SS Tested scores, this is timed in hours. For Community scores, this is the median range reported across our sources. |
| Projection / Sillage | 15% | How far the scent carries from the skin. In office and gym contexts, less projection can mean a higher score — because the situation demands discretion. In date-night contexts, moderate projection is rewarded. |
| Value | 10% | Performance and quality relative to the price. A $30 fragrance that performs like a $100 one scores higher than a $100 fragrance that performs like a $100 one. |
| Versatility | 10% | How many different situations and seasons the fragrance works in. A pure winter gourmand is excellent but not versatile; Bleu de Chanel works in almost any context. |
| Originality | 5% | How distinctive the fragrance smells compared to its category. Clones score lower here; unique compositions score higher. Low weight because originality matters less than performance for most buyers. |
How Community Research Works
When a fragrance carries a Community Score, here’s exactly what we did:
- Fragrantica data pull: We review the fragrance’s longevity and sillage voting distribution (the bar charts on each Fragrantica page), plus the user rating and the most helpful user reviews.
- Reddit search: We search r/fragrance for the fragrance name combined with situation-specific terms (“office,” “date,” “gym,” “work,” “compliment”). We read the full threads, not just top comments.
- YouTube cross-reference: We check whether the major fragrance reviewers’ assessments align with or diverge from the community consensus.
- Comment aggregation: We count and categorize individual user comments by sentiment (positive, negative, mixed) and by the specific claims made (longevity hours, projection distance, compliment reports, criticisms).
- Score derivation: The seven criteria are scored based on the aggregated data, with the typical ranges and majority sentiment driving the numbers — not outliers.
Every article states the total number of data points reviewed (comments + votes + threads). This number is specific to each article, not a site-wide claim.
Research Confidence
Each score also carries a Research Confidence level that reflects the depth and consistency of the data behind it:
- High — 3+ Reddit threads, 70+ user comments, strong Fragrantica voting sample, and consistent sentiment across sources. The score is well-supported.
- Medium — 2+ Reddit threads, 50+ user comments, adequate Fragrantica data but thinner coverage or more variation in sentiment. The score is directionally reliable but less precise.
- Low — Fewer than 2 dedicated threads, under 50 comments, or significant disagreement across sources. The score carries meaningful uncertainty and should be treated as preliminary.
We publish confidence levels because a score of 7.7 backed by 120 comments is not the same as a 7.7 backed by 40 — even though the number is identical. Science recognizes uncertainty; so do we.
A Note on Precision
Our scores are presented to one decimal place for consistency, but the underlying community data is heterogeneous — different people, different skin, different climates, self-selected samples. A difference of 0.1 between two fragrances is within the noise; a difference of 0.5 or more is meaningful. We encourage readers to treat scores as relative positioning within a list, not as absolute measurements.
How SS Tested Works
When a fragrance carries an SS Tested Score, here’s what happened:
- Application protocol: One spray on the chest (close range), one across the wrists (mid-distance), one at the neck (close range) — adjusted for potency. Applied 30 minutes before the situation being tested.
- Wear test: The fragrance is worn in the actual situation it’s being reviewed for — at the office, on a date, at the gym. Not on a test strip, not in a room alone.
- Timed documentation: We note projection at 30-minute intervals and record the hour when the fragrance becomes a skin scent. The longevity number is the total hours until it’s no longer detectable on our skin.
- Reaction log: Any compliments, comments or reactions are noted — including “nobody noticed,” which is valuable data for office and gym contexts.
- Repeat when possible: We aim to wear each fragrance in its target situation at least twice before scoring. Single-wear impressions are noted as such.
Editorial Independence
Scent Situations has never received a free product, a paid placement, or a sponsored review. Every fragrance reviewed here was either purchased with personal funds (full bottles or decants) or evaluated through publicly available community data.
Some links on this site are (or will be) affiliate links — meaning we may earn a small commission if you purchase through them, at no extra cost to you. Affiliate relationships never influence scores, rankings or recommendations. A fragrance that scores 4/10 keeps its 4 whether or not we earn a commission on the link.
If our methodology, sources or editorial standards ever change, this page will be updated and the change will be noted.
