This Polo Sport review is a personal SS Tested evaluation by Felipe Vides, who has worn Ralph Lauren’s 1994 aromatic green for over 20 years.
I was about 14
I don’t remember exactly where the bottle came from. A trip to the US, a gift from my parents, some duty-free store. My memory doesn’t hold that detail. What it holds is the smell and what happened after.
I put it on in the bathroom before going out. Someone called from the other room: “that cologne smells incredible.” I hadn’t asked. They came to me.
That happened for thirty years.
At school, at parties, at restaurants, at the gym, at work. When I started dating, my girlfriend’s sisters didn’t ask about me. They asked about the cologne. A few weeks ago, a colleague stopped me in the hallway at work and asked the same question I first heard at 14: “what cologne are you wearing?”
Thirty years. Same question.
I can’t be neutral about this fragrance. I’ll try anyway.

Scent profile
Top notes
Icy mint and aldehydes. Polo Sport opens fast — thirty seconds after the spray, it’s already working. Lavender, bergamot, lemon, mandarin orange and neroli come through in that opening minute — fresh without being simple, clean without being clinical. They don’t stay long but clear the way for what follows.
Heart notes
Ginger is the turning point. As the opening fades, ginger comes forward with seagrass and a quiet floral layer — jasmine, geranium, cyclamen — and that’s where Polo Sport gets the identity no copy has quite managed to reproduce. The aquatic quality here isn’t oceanic, isn’t salty, isn’t sweet. It’s closer to the air after a summer rain.
Base notes
Sandalwood, cedar, guaiac wood, amber, and musk. The base anchors without weighing down — warm woods that add depth without darkening the fragrance. With body heat, this base comes forward in a way most modern aquatics don’t manage. The vintage Cosmair formula included oakmoss here, which contributed to the earthier character of pre-2006 batches; the current Luxury Products version replaced it with lighter woody ambers.
| Family | Notes |
|---|---|
| Top | Mint, aldehydes, lavender, bergamot, lemon, mandarin orange, artemisia, neroli |
| Heart | Seagrass, ginger, jasmine, geranium, cyclamen, rose, Brazilian rosewood |
| Base | Musk, sandalwood, cedar, guaiac wood, amber |

Performance
Longevity
Here’s the honest conversation you need to have before buying.
Polo Sport today is not Polo Sport from the 90s. The reformulation — there were several over the years, with the most significant shift happening during the transition from Cosmair to Luxury Products — changed the performance profile considerably. Users with vintage bottles report 8 to 14 hours of longevity consistently. Independent sources from 2024 and 2025 put current batches at 3 to 4 hours on normal skin.
On my skin: at the gym, with my body warming up, I get 3 solid hours. Enough to train, leave, and still get a comment on the way to the car.
Projection
Moderate. Polo Sport projects enough to be noticed up close but doesn’t take over a room. That’s exactly what you want in a shared space. On the street or at a casual event, it may feel understated to someone used to high-impact fragrances. To someone who knows what they’re smelling, it reads as restraint, not weakness.
Trail
Close to medium. It leaves a light wake as you walk, nothing intrusive. With body heat, it opens a little more. The trail is one of the reasons it works so well at the gym: present enough to be noticed, polite enough not to bother the person on the next machine.
The bottle I don’t open
I have two bottles of Polo Sport at home right now. One open, which I use. One sealed, which I bought knowing I won’t open it.
That might sound strange. But anyone who follows the fragrance world understands: a sealed Polo Sport, depending on the batch, is a different experience from the current version. The original formula had a projection and longevity that the reformulated version doesn’t replicate. It’s not nostalgia. It’s a real difference, documented, debated in hundreds of threads on r/fragrance and Fragrantica.
I keep the sealed bottle as a reference. Physical proof that version existed. And because sometimes opening a vintage bottle and wearing it once is a way of going back in time that no other technology offers.
If you’re looking for Polo Sport for the first time today, buy the current version without hesitation. The DNA is there. The mint, the ginger, the character survived the reformulation. What changed was the volume: it lasts less, projects less. What makes the difference in practice is knowing how to apply it — three sprays, on skin, before you leave.
If you find an old bottle in a family cabinet, a thrift store, or a second-hand shop, don’t walk past it.

For which situation?
| Situation | Works? | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Gym | Yes | Editor’s pick — see the full gym guide |
| Casual daytime | Yes | Versatile, inoffensive, pleasant |
| Work / office | Yes | Discreet projection, safe for closed spaces — office cologne guide |
| Date (casual) | Yes, with caveats | Works in casual contexts; for a formal dinner, consider something else — date night cologne guide |
| Night out / club | No | Projection too low for the context |
| Hot summer | Yes | Mint and aquatic hold well in heat |
| Cold weather / evening | No | Loses its appeal in low temperatures — for cold evenings, see our Jo Malone Myrrh & Tonka review |
The versatility is real. I’ve worn it in every situation on that list across 20 years. But it’s not a fragrance for every night — it’s a fragrance for almost every day.

What the community says
What wearers say: On Fragrantica, Polo Sport holds a 3.94/5 rating across 2,600+ votes — above average for the aquatic category. Despite inspiring a whole generation of aquatics, nothing smells quite like it. Some say it smells like “new flip-flops.” I say it smells like freedom. Both things can be true at the same time. The loudest discussion in the community is the reformulation: the original blend (Cosmair) and the current version (Luxury Products) perform very differently. Independent sources from 2024 and 2025 consistently report 3 to 4 hours of longevity on current batches, against 8 to 14 hours reported by users with vintage bottles from the 90s. The scent DNA survived. The volume didn’t.
Polo Sport and its offspring
The aquatic-aromatic DNA of Polo Sport influenced more fragrances than almost any other 90s release outside of Cool Water. Newer versions try to capture that icy mint combined with a woody base and marine heart. Some get close. None land in the same place.
If you want something in the same territory with a different performance profile:
- Davidoff Cool Water — the predecessor that invented the aquatic aromatic, heavier and fuller
- Versace Pour Homme — cleaner, more modern, without the characteristic mint
- Nautica Voyage — a simplified, very accessible version of the same territory
None of them are Polo Sport. They’re good fragrances. They’re different.
For readers interested in how dupe culture works around the most-imitated fragrance in the world, our Baccarat Rouge 540 dupes guide covers that territory — from a $15 buy to a $49 near-match.
Polo Sport Review — The Verdict
I have 30 years with this fragrance. I started before I knew what a fragrance pyramid was, before I understood what oakmoss meant, before I read a single review. I learned to love perfume because of it.
The 8.2 score is honest: the longevity of the current formula costs points the vintage version wouldn’t lose. With the original Cosmair formula, the score would be 9.0 without argument.
But what the score doesn’t capture: no other fragrance I’ve worn has made more people ask what I was wearing. None. That metric matters as much as any other.
If you’ve never worn Polo Sport, wear it. Once. See what happens when you walk into a room with it.
Then tell me.
Frequently asked questions
Was Polo Sport discontinued?
No. It’s still produced and sold. You can find it at import stores, on the US Amazon, and through some distributors. What changed over the years was the formula, not the availability.
Was the old formula really that much better?
Longevity and projection were significantly stronger, according to consistent reports from users with vintage bottles. The scent DNA survived. Whether that difference matters to you depends on how you use the fragrance.
How many sprays should I use?
Three at most for casual use. For the gym specifically: two sprays — one on the chest, one on the wrist — applied 10 minutes before you arrive. Body heat does the rest. See the full application guide in the gym cologne article.
Is it worth buying a sealed vintage bottle if I find one?
If the price is reasonable and the source is trustworthy, yes. The performance difference is real. Check the batch and the condition of the seal — bottles stored poorly oxidize even when closed.
Why is “unique” the most common descriptor if it inspired so many copies?
Because the fragrances it influenced didn’t reproduce the exact combination of mint, ginger, and oakmoss in this configuration. They copied the territory. They didn’t reach the same address.
